Aftermaths and Afterlives of Deindustrialization
This project begins with a group of manatees in Massachusetts, so accustomed to spending summers in warm water outside of a power plant that after the plant closes they return the following year only to be killed by unexpectedly cold waters. This project moves in and out of neighborhoods throughout East Europe and the United States where both humans and nonhumans must adapt to life in the wake of industry. We examine the effects of deindustrialization on the people, places, animals, and environments whose survival has been deeply connected to industries that have shut down.
